About this book

Against the backdrop of the Partition of '47, the state of Pakistan was born; its eastern wing, today's Bangladesh, was then East Pakistan. The first and greatest proof that two lands at opposite ends, divided by language and culture, could not be bound together by religion alone was the Language Movement of 1952. Through it, Bengali nationalism emerged. Later, Ayub Khan's Basic Democracy, the Education Movement of '62, the Six-Point Movement of '66, the Mass Uprising of '69 and the results of the 1970 general election proved that the birth of an independent, sovereign state was only a matter of time. When the Pakistani ruling clique refused to accept the verdict of the 1970 general election, the Bengalis' demands for both independence and democracy grew strong.
